This sounds like you have a process(s) that are which are consuming lots of memory and forcing the Mac to page-out to disk. the /var/vm/swapfile(s) get deleted when you reboot, which would explain the space coming back after you boot. The kernel_task is the guts of Mac OS X, and is responsible for doing process paging. Another indication it might be process paging that is going on.
I would start looking at the Activity Monitor -> Memory tab.
Also 4GB free is not a lot of space, and you should consider freeing up some more space. It may even be possible to upgrade the SSD storage with 3rd party options (just something to consider).
